After news broke that a leaked opinion from Supreme Court Justice Alito would overturn RoevWade and return all abortion laws to the states, let's look at what is and isn't legal in Florida now.

FDA makes abortion pills permanently available through mail and telehealth by removing in-person restrictionAbortion rights advocates cheered at the latest move by the FDA, permanently allowing women to obtain abortion pills in the mail. The law takes effect July 1, 2022. But the abortion ban is widely expected to be challenged and the case will likely land before the Florida Supreme Court, where DeSantis has appointed three of the sitting seven justices.

“There are many things considered lethal by obstetricians and geneticists that are diagnosed after 15 weeks but do not meet the bill’s definition of lethal which is ‘shortly after birth,’” Dr. Kristen Witkowski, an obstetrician/gynecologist in Tampa, said in an email. "Family planning and women's health should not be dictated by politicians," said Tant."The very personal and private decision of a couple about when to start their families and under what circumstances should rest with them, their doctors and their faith."

"The conservative values of freedom and limited government that the Governor claims to fight for, have gone right out the window when it comes to a woman’s choice about her own body," said Taddeo. “Our patients here in Florida would be forced to travel an average of 570 miles farther to the nearest clinic, significantly increasing both the cost and the risks associated with pregnancy, particularly for those patients with high-risk pregnancies,” said a letter to Florida legislators signed by 700 physicians.

Proponents of the bill say amniocentesis may still be performed at any stage of a pregnancy, and birth defects like Down syndrome and cystic fibrosis don't justify abortions.
