A northern Victorian council has approved 16 townhouses to be built on land that was significantly flooded in the Murray River town of Echuca during last year's flood.

The Campaspe Shire Council has approved townhouses to be built on land inundated in last year's floods in Echuca

The property is on the unprotected side of a temporary levee built to stop floodwater from the Murray River inundating the town. In a submission to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, the catchment authority said the development posed an unacceptable risk.
