Dr King declined to give any more details about these encounters when approached by the ABC after her speech, but indicated they occurred between 2013 and 2019, when the bilateral relationship became more complex and then began to rapidly decline. Both intelligence agencies and federal government MPs have said there's abundant evidence that China's government tries to recruit academics, students and international students to help it steal intellectual property, build support for its objectives and monitor political opponents.was "engaged in the most sustained, sophisticated and scaled theft of intellectual property and expertise in human history".
"We have conflated a deep understanding of China with a fear that such understanding equates to agreement with, or having been bought off by China," she said.The ABC has spoken with several academics and analysts who work on China about Dr King's accusations.
