Australia’s grocery sector has been classified as an “oligopoly” following the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Supermarket Inquiry.

Commissioned in January 2024, the report gathered insights from over 21,000 Australians and more than 80 public submissions. “I directed the ACCC to commence an inquiry into supermarkets in January and today they deliver their interim report. This is an important piece of work,” Mr Albanese said in a statement.

On top of these challenges, concerns persisted about the supermarket industry's concentration, particularly regarding the dominance of Coles and Woolworths. “Greater competition is critical for lifting dynamism, productivity and wages growth, putting downward pressure on prices and delivering more choice,” Mr Leigh said.
