Industry figures say Victoria’s attitude is raising energy prices and emissions and preventing the closure of coal power stations

The Victorian government’s “demonisation” of gas has driven up carbon emissions by preventing the closure of coal power stations, large industrial energy users say.

Ms Brakey said the ACCC’s review into the practices of gas retailers – prompted by concerns among industrial gas users about the prices and terms of supply – found that despite improvements last year, “some retailers’ standard selling practices do appear to fall short of what we would expect in a workably competitive market”.

Ms Brakey also offered some hope for gas buyers more broadly that softer prices could be in the offing because of a pull-back in local and global spot rates.
