Authorities have expressed concern that “an accelerant” may have been used during a Sydney synagogue attack in the third targeting of the Jewish community across the city in two days.
The Newtown Synagogue was graffitied with large red swastikas as perpetrators attempted the light the place on fire during the early hours of Saturday morning, NSW Police said., while police were told graffiti had been spray painted on a house on Henry Street in Queens Park.

Picture: NewsWire / Simon Bullard.“Police and the government remain very concerned that an accelerant may have been used in Newtown on Saturday morning. “This is obviously a fraught time in the city’s history, but we need to stick together,” Mr Minns told reporters.NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said authorities were looking into matters from late 2024 in relation to the arson attacks and said she was not sure whether the attacks were linked.
Ms Webb also noted the fire at Newtown Synagogue did not take hold and was “self-extinguished” within three minutes. He also highlighted changes to laws that target protesting outside places of worship and stressed that the state government was looking at vilification and hate laws.The possible use of an accelerant at a Newtown Synagogue comes after the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne was burnt out in a terrorist attack.
