The scheme is set to be built on Charter Street in Accrington
Major plans for a £3m eco-housing estate for military veterans and the homeless have been resurrected with a hi-tech twist. In April last year Hyndburn Borough Council’s planning committee approved the scheme by Buildings for Humanity for a site on Charter Street in Accrington.
It seeks to build a 100 per cent affordable, ‘zero carbon’ housing scheme of 46 properties including a community training hub, communal growing spaces, private and communal gardens. The land had provisionally been given for nothing to Buildings for Humanity by the Hyndburn Council’s cabinet in September 2019 but since then the community interest company’s business model has changed.On Thursday night Hyndburn Council’s cabinet agreed to see the land to the firm for £200,000.
“Building for Humanity want to help disadvantaged people access good quality housing with support and therefore support the council by accommodating homeless people and those at risk of rough sleeping. This is a really exciting housing project with the proposed development adopting a new method of construction using innovative 3D concrete printing technology currently installed at Accrington and Rossendale College. In addition the 46 dwellings and community centre will be net zero carbon.
