A young child in the Australian Capital Territory has been hospitalised after eating a death cap mushroom which if left untreated can be fatal.

ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman has warned that any part of the mushrooms can be deadly if consumed even when cooked.

“This is an unfortunate reminder that wild mushrooms can grow anywhere in our region at any time. Canberrans should remember that it is never safe to pick and eat wild mushrooms. Residents were also directed not to touch the deadly fungi and to ensure pets were kept away from them. The Chief Health Officer added that it was important to take any remaining mushroom to the hospital for identification while reducing as much physical contact as possible.
