The ACT Greens have committed to a range of measures to combat climate change , including establishing a Chief Heat Officer, planting more trees, and bringing back Canberra 's iconic bus shelters, if elected in October.
"It's about creating a dedicated role that looks at these issues of how do we prevent heat related illness and injury and death, in the context of a warming climate," Mr Rattenbury said. "You'd certainly need somebody that has got a good scientific understanding of the issues that are arising, an ability to work across a range of government agencies," he said.Planting 20,000 trees per year
"By having that goal, the nurseries will start to produce the trees, we'll get the people in to plant them, we'll be looking for the spots to put them in. There'll be sorts of places they could go — having lined bike baths and footpaths with trees, so that when it does get to those hot days, they're well-shaded.
"The ACT government has not updated its species list for street tree plantings to consider future climate warming. We will prioritise tree species that are most suited to the projected future climate and align species with other urban habitat and biodiversity goals where feasible," the policy reads.
