Dr Youngentob said it was unlikely the koala had separated from a NSW population, and she "wouldn't be surprised if there are more koalas in area".Supplied: David Pocock"They do disperse, but it's quite unlikely that this is a dispersal event because they're relatively rare,"It's much more likely that we're finding an animal living in the actual habitat that it's in.
Under federal environment laws in 2022, the status of koalas was escalated from "vulnerable" to "endangered", and a federal partnership helps track the species locally and implement a national recovery plan.The species was listed as endangered in the ACT in 2023, and koalas were included in the ACT government's, which aims to "identify, protect and revive" koala populations in the territory.
"We have to find better ways to build housing that doesn't consistently come at the expense of nature."
