The release of Australian journalist Cheng Lei this week has reignited the spotlight on China’s judicial system.
Australian TV journalist Cheng Lei was finally reunited with her family last week after almost three years detained in China on national security charges.
It’s hard to imagine the scenes inside her Melbourne home, but what’s even harder to imagine is what she experienced in the two years and 11 months she was in a Chinese jail. China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry this week strongly rejected any criticism of its judicial system, stating it was a “country of the rule of law”.But China’s judicial system is concerningly opaque and has long been the subject of human rights questions for the international community due to the perceived undue influence the Chinese Communist Party has over the courts and its practice of arbitrarily detaining individuals accused of vague crimes.
