Former Houston City Councilmember Ada Edwards, a longtime community activist who represented District D in south Houston for six years in the early 2000s, has died. She was 80 years old."During her time as the District D Council Member, she worked to find solutions without compromising her beliefs and was steadfast in fighting to improve the lives of all Houstonians," Turner said."She advocated for affordable housing, social justice and community empowerment.
Edwards served two terms on City Council from 2001 to 2007 before losing her seat to term limits. Following her stint on council, she was hired to be then-Mayor Bill White's deputy chief of staff for neighborhood issues. Before her time on City Council, Edwards was known as an activist. She was the founder of the Ida Delaney/Byron Gillum Justice Committee, which in the early 1990s advocated for police accountability reforms following the shooting deaths of Black people at the hands of Houston police officers.Edwards was a native of San Diego, where she was raised by her grandparents. She came to Houston in 1979, according to a 1990 newspaper profile.
She owned the business Jue Corp, which distributed audio and videotapes focused on Black audiences. In the 1990s, she was a field coordinator for the Harris County Democratic Party and was the founder of the Houston HIV Aids Action Coalition. She was also a founding board member of the AFL-CIO Community Union Fund.
While on City Council, Edwards led the State of Emergency HIV/AIDS Task Force and the Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee. She also produced and hosted a Sunday morning public affairs program,"Dialogue with Ada Edwards," on KBXX 97.9 FM.
