Hallucinatory rock opera Annette is a tale of doomed romance tricked out with supernatural curses, levitating babies, murder and the wacked-out delusions of the male ego. It's wonderful.
In the films of Leos Carax , the real world feels like a prison. His characters are always skipping town, fleeing commitments, finding rare moments of reprieve in dance or drink, or by hurling themselves from moving aeroplanes, desperate for escape.
Absurdly joining the fray, the film's key actors, Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard and a third-wheeling Simon Helberg , add their voices to the opening song, So May We Start – a mix of chugging keys and guitar, lace-clad backup singers, fourth-wall-breaking lyrics and Franglais puns – which asks if the production we're watching can please start.
The brothers Ron and Russell Mael conceived the project nearly a decade ago. They reached out to Carax, a self-described fan, after he featured their song How Are You Getting Home? in his shapeshifting last film, 2012's Holy Motors. Just as volatile is Henry's stage show, which we get to "enjoy" in full twice, shot in mostly long takes.
The film feels like it is dancing always one step ahead of the viewer – such as when the aura of danger around Henry is scrambled by the clownish sight of him smooshing a banana, or a later sight gag where the 6′2″ actor's legs protrude from a baby cot.
