The NSW health system faces calls for more standardised training after a 20-year-old man with a 97 per cent chance of surviving died in Sydney's St George Hospital.
Emergency warnings are in place for fires burning near Tenterfield, Tabulam, Cooks Gap and Stanthorpe, NSW; and south of Bundaberg, QLD.A coronial inquest has found four doctors involved in the care of a 20-year-old man who died following a serious car accident displayed "unsatisfactory professional conduct" in his treatment.
According to the coroner's report, Mr Fitzpatrick's breathing tube became dislodged which medical staff did not notice in time, resulting in a lack of oxygen to his brain. "I would like these four doctors to be held accountable for their actions, or lack of actions, and I would like to make sure that they are better trained or better equipped to deal with a situation like this rather than them going out with no supervision or no change in their behaviour," she said.
Magistrate Lee said "these are matters relevant to the protection of the health and safety of the public".Professor Carsten Palme, the director of head and neck surgery at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse and one of the expert testimonies during the coronial inquest, said while tracheostomies were very common in Australia there was no standard approach across all hospitals in how to handle events like Mr Fitzpatrick's.
"There are so many things that are meant to be standardised but they're not and I think this is a really important one, probably not even that difficult to tackle here."Mr Fitzpatrick has been remembered as a wanderer and free spirit who was unfailingly loyal and had a knack for drawing people to him."We'll see you again. Keep the engine running and the passenger seat warm for me. All the time in the world would never have been enough with you," she said.
