Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes sues Adele for allegedly plagiarizing his 2005 song 'Mulheres' in her 2015 hit 'Million Years Ago'.
Toninho Geraes, a 62-year-old Brazil ian samba composer, has filed a lawsuit alleging that British pop star Adele plagiarized his 2005 track 'Mulheres' in her 2015 hit 'Million Years Ago'. Geraes claims the similarities are 'blatant' and says he only went public with the issue after attempts to settle out of court were ignored. The lawsuit also names Adele 's frequent collaborator Greg Kurstin and the Brazil ian subsidiaries of Sony and Universal Music as defendants.
Adele's song was pulled from streaming services in Brazil in an unprecedented decision, although it is uncertain if this will be permanent as the case could be overturned. A scheduled conciliation hearing on December 19th took place without Adele or Kurstin attending, leaving Geraes' lawyer frustrated as no settlement offers were presented. Geraes is seeking lost royalties, £130,000 in moral damages, and songwriting credit on Adele's track. Neither Adele's PR company nor the law firm representing the defendants have commented on the situation
