In a time well before instant communication in 1859, it took days for word of the Admella shipwreck to reach authorities, during which survivors were stranded with no food and water.
On August 5, 1859, SS Admella , a 60-metre-long steamship, left Adelaide and set sail for Melbourne for what was meant to be a standard trip.
In a time before instant communication, it would take days for word of the shipwreck to reach authorities, meaning the survivors were stranded with no food and water. Those survivors sat and watched on with despair at rescue parties on shore, who struggled to find a way to get out and save them. The lightkeeper then walked to a nearby station to get a horse so he could ride into the relatively young town of Mount Gambier and send telegrams to Adelaide and Melbourne. The death toll from the Admella was much smaller than the Cantaraqui, which wrecked off the coast of King Island, Tasmania, in 1845.
The Port Macdonnell Maritime Museum houses a number of Admella artefacts, as well as a map showing all the shipwrecks in the region.
