Most patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer will not be cured, so cancer prevention and effective treatment of early-stage disease are the cornerstones of reducing mortality. Mounting evidence suggests that incorporation of neoadjuvant immunotherapy may lead to tumor regression and long-lasting anti-tumor immune responses in patients with resectable NSCLC.
In particular, CheckMate 816, which was the first reported phase 3 trial of neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy in NSCLC, demonstrated improved outcomes when nivolumab was added to standard neoadjuvant chemotherapy — and led to the approval of this regimen by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2022 .
