Greg Abbott for a letter calling for an end of DEI practices at state agencies and universities.AUSTIN — The organizations representing Black and Latino lawmakers, along with civil rights groups, criticized Gov.

At a Tuesday news conference, several speakers said Abbott mischaracterized how “DEI practices” are instituted, and said the governor was looking to further divide Texans instead of focusing on providing property tax relief. “This session should be focused on providing more resources, not taking them away,” said Rep. Ron Reynolds, D-Missouri City, and the chair of theon Tuesday morning. “DEI is essential to continue cultivating an environment where all students and faculty feel represented and supported.”

Last week, Abbott’s office sent a memo to state agencies and public university systems warning that “DEI initiatives” would violate anti-discrimination laws by favoring “some demographic groups to the detriment of others.” The letter did not provide examples of how a demographic group is favored over another. Abbott’s office did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on the press conference Tuesday.
