McLachlan still needs to oversee Tasmania’s entry into the AFL, which was all but confirmed after the, a new collective bargaining agreement with both male and female players, and the league’s ongoing inquiry into alleged racism at Hawthorn. Dillon, whose background is in law, has been at the AFL since 2000 and has covered a number of roles at league headquarters, including legal counsel, general counsel, game development, and executive manager football operations.AFL Photos via Getty Images
McLachlan took over from Andrew Demetriou in 2014, and will have been in the role for 10 years by the time his tenure comes to an end later this year. His legacy will include the formation of the AFLW competition and its fast-tracked expansion to 18 teams, landmark TV rights deals, and steering the competition through the COVID-19 pandemic, which he described as “the biggest financial crisis in history”.
