But the tribunal fallout continued for other reasons on Thursday, with 7NEWS Melbourne’s Tom Browne reporting the Swans were “not happy” with Woods’ statement.
“The Swans think that’s ridiculous because Buddy is a thousand-goal-plus legend of the AFL and he’s anything but cowardly from a general sense,” he said onSydney felt the AFL should not have instructed counsel to make those comments, an inference denied by the league.Credit:Swans legal representative Duncan Miller’s accusation that Cotchin was acting and “might get an invite to the Logies instead of the Brownlow” was also raised in the wake of the hearing.
In a strongly worded statement on Thursday afternoon, the AFL defended Franklin and urged lawyers to tone down their ‘rhetorical flourishes’ in future tribunal meetings.“Lance Franklin is a champion of our game. “In the making of submissions, Legal Counsel Assisting the Tribunal used his own words to describe the circumstances of the strike on Trent Cotchin, namely that Mr Cotchin was reasonably not expecting to be struck by Mr Franklin.“It is the AFL’s view that rhetorical flourishes of the nature used by both Counsel last night should not be part of the AFL tribunal process and they do not reflect the views of the AFL.
“The AFL has today contacted Lance Franklin and the Sydney Swans to apologise for the comment and reiterated our respect for Lance and his standing in the game.”If you’d like to view this content, please adjust your
