Teammates were shocked when they found out the footy power couple are expecting in March.
veteran Hannah Priest has announced she is expecting a baby, revealing she has played every game this season while pregnant. Priest has played every possible game since the Saints’ inception into the competition in 2020, including all five games this season while pregnant.
The former captain’s announcement comes on the eve of what would have been her 75th consecutive game this weekend. Priest will now sit out the remainder of the year, but is committed to remaining involved with the group in an off-field role.
“To share the news with the girls on Monday was really special. It’s been a pretty hard secret to keep, so I’m glad it’s finally out.
“The club and this group have been such a huge part of my life, so while I’m disappointed I won’t be out there for the rest of the season, I’m looking forward to staying involved and supporting the girls however I can. “We haven’t had the start we would have hoped for, but my belief in this group couldn’t be stronger. There’s so much young talent coming through and a real desire to get better.
“I’ll always back this group and what we’re building, and I’m excited to keep playing my part from the sidelines. ”St Kilda’s AFLW general manager Jessie Mulholland said Priest would continue to have a big impact from the sidelines.
“She has played such an important role in shaping our standards and culture, and we know she’ll continue to have a meaningful impact on the group. “While we would have loved to see Hannah run out for her 75th game this weekend, there are some milestones that are bigger than football, and this is certainly one of them. “We couldn’t be happier for Hannah and Jake, and we can’t wait to welcome a little Saint into the fold.
” Priest’s extraordinary athletic feat is not unprecedented, with former Hawthorn vice-captain Jess Duffin having played most of AFLW Season 7 while pregnant. Duffin, who played in the first ever AFW game for Collingwood against Carlton, found out in Round 2 of Season 7 that she was pregnant, and thoroughly assessed the risks before deciding to play on.
“It was explained to me that I needed to have a car crash ,” Duffin said in 2022. “Obviously I asked about the risk factors as I further went along and they basically said that up until 12 weeks, it would have to be quite a significant impact because where the baby was sitting at the time was quite protected. “I had one doctor tell me that it would be fine.
Then I got advice from another two to make 100 per cent sure.
“I was happy to continue and my husband was happy for me to continue so that’s all that matters. ”
