The AFP is working to stop the laundering of millions of dollars made from illicit drug importation after identifying 51 Italian organised crime groups across the country, with 14 known to have ties to the mafia-type Ndrangheta crime syndicate.
Assistant Commissioner Nigel Ryan said the Ndrangheta was pulling the strings of the outlaw motorcycle gangs which are responsible for some of the most significant violence in Australia. Picture: AFP
Referring to those crime clans, Assistant Commissioner Ryan said: “The Italians have been able to fly under the radar for many many years, the Italians have established themselves since the early 1920s in Australia.” “Unleashing this next phase will be long and challenging but the AFP is up to the challenge and to be frank we need to be,” he said.
Operation Ironside has been working in conjunction with Italian, US, Spanish and Brazilian authorities to begin severing the Ndrangheta’s significant and wide-reaching power.
