The ACTU and the Business Council of Australia have disagreed about the extent of AI regulation being implemented in the United States, after BCA chief executive Bran Black held up the US as a model for light-touch regulation.
“Australia has so much natural advantage, but the message major investors in the United States is that we aren’t quite sure that we want it,” Black said. “When I was in New York recently, one of the most senior investors in that city made the point to us that from his perspective: the US says yes, Asia says yes, Europe says no. What will Australia say?
”ACTU assistant secretary Joseph Mitchell pushed back, saying that the regulatory environment in the US was “a lot more diverse than you said, Bran”.
“When you look at states like New York, California and soon to be Illinois, they have really strong regulations on artificial intelligence,” he said. “We have transparency requirements coming out of California, which Anthropic actually supported, and soon to be more guardrails coming into Illinois. ”
