The pandemic and construction delays held up the $3 million makeover of the first and third floors.
The overhaul includes a new entryway, main information desk, an artwalk and an inclusive restroom. One of the bigger renovations made is the revamped children’s area, which now includes a story room and a flexible programming space that features technology and equipment to focus on science, technology, reading, engineering, art and math.
“Central Library is an integral part of the City of San Antonio, and we know this is a much-anticipated reopening,” San Antonio Public Library Director Ramiro S. Salazar said in a statement. “We are excited to share the improved spaces with the residents of San Antonio and visitors to our city.” While the reopening signals a return to regular services, the sixth floor of the library will remain closed as construction is underway on library’s Texana and Genealogy Department. In the meantime, the department will offer services on the first floor. It’s not clear when construction will be complete.
