Flu levels in New Jersey have reached high levels statewide.
Influenza is now spreading rapidly in New Jersey, with levels high statewide, according to the state Department of Health’s latestThe southeast and central-west regions are seeing moderate activity, but the rest of the state — the northeast, northwest, central-east and southwest — are witnessing high levels.
There have been 12,873 influenza cases reported in New Jersey from PCR and rapid tests. There have been 10 severe cases, and 15 outbreaks in long-term care facilities, but no pediatric deaths, the report said. Emergency department visits associated with influenza-like illness are higher than last week and higher than this same week last year, the report said.
Flu levels had been low since the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in New Jersey, with residents wearing masks and social distancing. The state hasn’t seen sustained high levels of the flu since the winter of 2019-2020, before the arrival of the coronavirus., fueled by the spread of the highly contagious “stealth omicron” subvariant. New Jersey’s seven-day average for confirmed new cases was 1,122 on Wednesday, up 30% from a week ago and up 27% from a month ago.
