A chic pick to make the playoffs after six straight losing seasons, the store-bought Rangers with newly signed ace Jacob deGrom talked openly this spring about World Series visions. And in the run-up to this first showdown of the season, they talked about matching up with the defending champs — an Astros team that has won the American League West in every full season since the Rangers’ last division title in 2016.
Adding a three-time-champion manager this time around and the best pitcher on the planet will do that for a team —maybe inspire it even to circle an April date on baseball’s notoriously long and humbling schedule. Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager will miss first series this year against Astros because of a hamstring injury.Seager won’t play after suffering a hamstring injury this week. It's expected to sideline him for a month. And deGrom’s first career start against the Astros will have to wait because the two-time Cy Young winner’s schedule doesn’t line up for this series.
Nobody expected the road back to late October to be easy for the Astros — certainly not in a division with a rising young Seattle team trying to build off consecutive 90-win seasons.
