Justin Trudeau says Canada must 'acknowledge the truth' about the many injustices its Indigenous people face, following the discovery of bodies at a former Indigenous residential school.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told a coalition of indigenous rights groups that his government has created a plan to help remedy generations of racial discrimination against the country's indigenous population.Mr Trudeau has acknowledged that to truly heal wounds, "we must first acknowledge the truth"

From the 19th century until the 1970s, more than 150,000 First Nations children were required to attend state-funded Christian schools"To truly heal these wounds, we must first acknowledge the truth," he said. "The truth must be told, and all Canadians must stand with indigenous peoples against injustice," he said.

The Kamloops school operated between 1890 and 1969, when the Canadian government took over operations from the Catholic Church and operated it as a day school until it closed in 1978.
