ANALYSIS: After five days of Nicola Gobbo on the royal commission stand, what did we learn?
"I'm not saying what I did was right at all, but I was kind of inducted into this netherworld of police, made to feel very important and, sure, I argued the ethics and other issues with them as time went on, but I saw no ending to it," she said.Senior police have long maintained that they did not know Ms Gobbo was informing on her own clients.
But Ms Gobbo said Victorian investigators flew into a panic at the prospect of their secret arrangement being uncovered by federal police."[They] said to me that they had to come and collect the phone that I was using to speak to them on, and that if I was arrested or the federal police came near me, to not say anything about them," she said.Eventually, her double agency became too much to bear. Ms Gobbo became desperate for a way out.
And though she was representing Tony Mokbel, she told the royal commission that she was driven to inform on him in order to free herself."I wanted a tram to hit me on the way to court … because I could not work out how to not disappoint anyone, or how to not let anyone down and how to get out of that mess," she said.
But the former barrister's evidence, and the weight it is given, is likely to be undermined by her history of dishonesty. Unlikely allies as they are, senior police officers and convicted killers have spent the past few days roundly dismissing Ms Gobbo's testimony as fabrication."I want to put it to you, Ms Gobbo, that you are a spectacularly good liar. Do you accept that," Jeff Gleeson, QC for former chief commissioner Simon Overland, asked.
