After horror, failure of Uvalde massacre, business as usual at NRA meeting in Houston | FarrahTomazin
It’s almost midday at the National Rifle Association convention in Houston, three days after the worst school shooting in Texas history, and dozens of people are sitting in a seminar being taught about how to prepare for such horrific attacks.
Two levels below, the first floor of the George R Brown Convention Centre is buzzing as gun-owning Americans weave their way through hundreds of stalls showcasing the latest firearms and gear: high-powered assault rifles; gun safety programs for children; military tactical clothing. “Every building should have a single entry point. No one should ever be able to get near a classroom until they have been checked, scanned and screened… Above all, from this day forward, every school in America should have an armed police officer or an armed resources officer on duty at all times.”“Clearly, we need to make it far easier to confine the violent and mentally deranged into mental institutions,” he said.
Scrutiny has centred on Abbott himself, and his decision to announce the details of the shooting that were later proved untrue.Republican politicians John Cornyn and Dan Crenshaw also withdrew, citing “scheduling conflicts”, while numerous musicians pulled out as well, includedsinger-songwriter Don McLean, who said it would be “disrespectful and hurtful” to perform so soon after the tragedy.
“I have two children in elementary school,” said the woman, who gave her name only as Leyna. “I don’t want to send my babies to school wondering if they’re going to die.”
