McCarthy said Sunday that he believes Trump will be the Republican nominee for president....
reported that McCarthy secretly promised Trump he would push to have the former president’s impeachment record expunged in exchange for a pass on endorsing Trump publicly. The Politico report said McCarthy made that promise as a way to further placate the former president after his remarks to CNBC.
In fact, McCarthy used Sunday’s interview to take a shot at DeSantis, saying he wouldn’t have been elected to his current post had Trump not endorsed him in his first race for governor in 2018.“Look, I served with Ron DeSantis,” McCarthy said. “He’s not at the same level as President Trump by any shape or form. He would not have gotten elected without President Trump’s endorsement.”
