Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez put an emphatic stop to any thoughts of Red Bull's Singapore loss being more than a one-off.

The team didn’t mourn its winning streaks coming to an end. As Verstappen put it on Thursday after recurring questions about his Singapore defeat: “S— happens.” It was time to move on and focus on Japan.

The RB19 flashed its high-speed strength as well. A look at the GPS data shows Verstappen was quicker than Norris and Leclerc through the esses in the first sector, carrying far more speed. The same was true at Spoon, the fast left-hander at the top of the circuit — Verstappen was not only able to brake far later, but he was around 8 km/h up on Leclerc through the corner. It points to the RB19 being in fine fettle once again.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner called Max Verstappen’s start to the weekend a “statement of intent” that offered a “good starting point.” With Red Bull and Verstappen’s advantage returning at Suzuka, the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Aston Martin will return to their regular ‘best of the rest’ battle.
