After years of delays, project to replace uncovered drinking water reservoirs moves ahead

Tank construction at Levine reservoir in Paterson is set to begin later this year.

The Passaic Valley Water Commission has put two more pieces in place as it moves forward with its long-delayed project to drain its three reservoirs on Garret Mountain and replace them with concrete tanks.

in Paterson’s Great Falls historic district. PVWC spokesman Bryan Frierson said construction could begin “sometime in the second quarter of 2023,” which means spring or summer. A U.S. Army tank symbolically guards the New Street Reservoir in Woodland Park. The reservoir is at the entrance of Garret Mountain Reservation, Passaic County's largest park.

The only other open-air reservoir in New Jersey that stores already-treated drinking water is in Trenton. Uncovered reservoirs are vulnerable to contamination from birds, wildlife and runoff, so the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the PVWC, Newark, and Trenton to find a better way to store drinking water.
