Only seven of the nearly 300 Victorian aged care facilities with active COVID-19 outbreaks have had infection control spot checks ordered by the nation’s aged care watchdog to help facilities curb rising infections.
After a recent review of the watchdog’s practises, the commission resolved to do more spot checks at aged care facilities with a high risk of COVID-19 outbreaks, and to ensure providers were better prepared for outbreaks. The commission also planned to proactively contact providers to ensure they had an outbreak management plan, Ms Anderson said.
“Right now, aged care homes need help with infection control, they need help with managing this airborne virus, and they need the regulator to go in find out what is not working well,” Dr Russell said. Aged care resident Kay Seymour said it was “horrible” to be confined to her room for 22 days last month at her aged care facility, Somerville Gardens Care Community.
