Ageing boomers, a nursing shortage, and a federal capital works system labelled as a 'lottery' are forcing some older residents to separate from their families, some regional aged care providers say.

Chris Proctor and his aunty Heather Campbell are relieved his mother Pam is finally secured aged care in Port Lincoln.Some regional aged care providers say elderly clients have to find a bed hundreds of kilometres away from home due to high demand.

His mother was initially moved to Elliston, 170 kilometres away from her 92-year-old sister Heather Campbell, to receive the care she needed. He later told the ABC there were not enough nurses for hospitals, let alone for aged care residences, with regional sites having to employ more expensive locum agency nurses to legally operate.

A spokesperson for Aged Care Minister Mark Butler said $49 million had been allocated nationally to build staff accommodation in rural to very remote communities to help providers attract and retain aged care workers. Nurse Emily Prakash at the UniSA and Matthew Flinders Home education centre training to work in aged care."We were successful in over $1 billion of applications, in over 240 applications, received by the Commonwealth," Ms Meredith said.Ms Meredith has asked the Community Affairs Legislation Committee to look at a more planned approach to capital funding.
