Some customers are facing an increase in gas usage tariffs of more than 30 per cent as retailers pass on the impact of much higher gas costs.

Households are being hit with double-digit increases in their gas tariffs, with at least some customers at AGL Energy facing a 35 per cent rise, showing the scant benefit that consumers can expect to see in the short term from the Albanese government’s intervention on energy prices.

EnergyAustralia so far has only increased standing offer tariffs as per previously advised for January 1, but is expected to also raise contract rates.and come as business customers are expected to be hit by even bigger jumps. They indicate that the price cap introduced by the government in December of $12 a gigajoule for uncontracted wholesale gas prices is having no softening impact on bill increases amid the broader impact of rising gas costs.

In Victoria, standing offer tariffs for gas customers jumped on January 1 by about 28 per cent across residential and business customers at EnergyAustralia, 22 per cent at AGL and 39.1 per cent at Alinta Energy. The increases pave the way for rises in variable plans, not all of which have yet been advised by retailers.

Queensland customers will benefit from the smallest increase in Origin’s portfolio, at 5.8 per cent or $50 for the average household.“Like all retailers, we have been facing materially high gas costs over recent months, which means it costs us more to supply gas to our customers,” an Origin spokesman said.“Increasing prices is never a decision we take lightly, especially when we know people are struggling with higher costs of living.
