Ahsoka brings two unknown villains into the Star Wars story, introducing new dark side Force users who aren't Sith. What could they be instead?

Ahsoka will introduce two new dark side Force users to Star Wars canon, neither of whom will be Sith. The series will function as a pseudo-sequel to Star Wars Rebels, as it brings the Ghost crew back into the fold. Equally, it will partly serve as Star Wars’ canon version of the Heir to the Empire storyline from Timothy Zahn’s Expanded Universe novels, showcasing Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return between the events of the original Star Wars trilogy and the sequels.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Though little is known about these two characters currently, it has been confirmed that they will be working with Morgan Elsbeth , who was last seen in The Mandalorian season 2’s introductory Ahsoka episode. All of this comes back to Thrawn – but that doesn’t answer the question of who Baylan and Shin are, where they come from, or how they ended up with orange-colored lightsabers and dark side Force abilities.

Those characters are better categorized as agents of the Sith. The same can be said of Supreme Leader Snoke. Though Snoke and Kylo both acted in Palpatine’s interests, they were never truly apprenticed to him. Maul’s “brother” Savage being a Sith also would have broken the rule of two – during the Clone Wars, there was only Darth Sidious and Darth Tyranus. The same reasoning applies to Ren and his Knights.

What Ahsoka's Force-Sensitive Villains Could Be If all those characters aren’t Sith, and Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati aren’t either, then what are they? The Inquisitors are agents of the Sith; but if Baylan and Shin are working for Thrawn in some capacity, then they cannot be considered to be serving the Sith – not unless Thrawn somehow knows Palpatine is still around at this point. Instead, it’s plausible that Baylan and Shin are Dark Jedi, a term last used in the old EU.

Perhaps they are new Order 66 survivors who lost themselves along the way. More intriguing, however, is the rumor that Baylan and Shin aren’t from the Mandoverse’s time period at all. A shot in the Ahsoka trailer shows Baylan in what appears to be the World Between Worlds, a mystical plane that makes time travel possible. As such, Baylan and Shin could be from a completely different time entirely.
