Things are moving fast, maybe too fast, in the mad dash for deeper artificial-intelligence capabilities as well as for regulation to rein the technology in.
But despite a nearly pathological zeal among lawmakers and some technologists to establish a regulatory framework for AI, it may be too late to put the proverbial genie back into the bottle, tech experts told MarketWatch. It’s a typical narrative around tech regulation: plenty of bluster and scant results. This time, though, the calls for laws are coming early in the development of the technology in question, and there is bipartisan momentum. European lawmakers are also weighing in. On Monday, they issued a letter laying out several initiatives they would like to see the European Parliament take, including providing a framework within the proposed AI Act to steer the direction of AI in a way that is “human-centric, safe and trustworthy.” They’re also calling for a global summit on AI’s risks to be attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Joe Biden.
