Destanee Aiava made a stunning comeback to win her first Grand Slam match at the Australian Open, while Novak Djokovic weathered an early challenge.
A new Australian tennis cult hero has emerged on Monday night at Melbourne Park, with Destanee Aiava coming back from a set and 2-5 down to secure her first career Grand Slam win.
Also down a break in the third set, Aiava fought back to even the scorecard at 5-5, before her and Minnen both broke each other to take the match to a 10-point tiebreaker. The four-set encounter started off as well as it could have for the enough American, taking the first set after a surprise break on the 10-time Australian Open champion.
Ranked 107, Basavareddy was able to see off three break points of his own, including one when trying to serve out the set, and grabbed the lead when Djokovic missed a forehand. Over on Margaret Court during the evening session, Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz obliterated Russian-Kazakhstani Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 7-5, 6-1 to progress through to the second round.
