Eighteen months after vowing to air-condition all state classrooms to cool kids and help combat COVID, the government has met its target two months early.

Every single classroom, library and staff room in Queensland state schools are now air-conditioned, while the education department continues to assess ventilation to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Acting Premier Steven Miles said about 10,000 spaces in 649 state schools were air-conditioned as term 2 began. “We know that students learn best when they’re in cooler and comfortable learning environments,” he said.In November, the department vowed to conduct ventilation audits to assess the flow of fresh air through classrooms and staff rooms. This was considered vital to limiting the spread of viruses. The Victorian and NSW governments moved to introduce air filters in schools this year, with the firstalready installed.

Queensland Education Minister Grace Grace said the use of air ventilation and correctly operated and maintained air-conditioning systems that introduced fresh air from outside could help minimise the transmission of COVID-19 in schools. “Our investment also includes $71 million over three years to expand solar panel installations on state school rooftops to assist in offsetting the additional energy the air-conditioners will use,” she said.Parents forced to take days off work because their heat-stressed children suffered nosebleeds, vomiting and headaches
