The country’s biggest airport has released numbers that show domestic capacity isn’t back on the busiest routes, where prices are still high.

The country’s busiest airport has blasted Qantas and Virgin Australia for wasting capacity, saying a lack of seats, rather than lack of demand is limiting domestic passenger traffic.

“The trend with respect to domestic activity has continued, with passenger numbers stagnant over the past 15 months,” Mr Culbert said. International passenger numbers recovered to 89.1 per cent of pre-COVID-19 levels, while domestic airlines were at only 87 per cent of pre-COVID-19 levels on the busiest routes, despite saying they are operating at 100 per cent nationwide.

Overall cancellation rates remain at about double the long-term average at 3.6 per cent, while on time performance sits around 70 per cent. The airports say airlines rotate cancellations across different services to ensure they meet rules that allow them to maintain a slot as long as it is used 80 per cent of the time.
