This Japanese director served as the inspiration for many of your favourite movies. Without him, they might not exist. It’s hard to exaggerate the influence of Akira Kurosawa. Long before the first films of Studio Ghibli, Kurosawa sprung out of 1950s Japan with a time-weaving psychological thriller, ‘Rashomon.

The time-twisting thriller introduced one of Japan’s most prolific movie stars, Toshiro Mifune. Think Robert De Niro, but for Kurosawa instead of Scorsese. ‘HIGH AND LOW’ People in power are rarely forced to face the real-world consequences of their actions, and modern filmmakers have made banquets out of the resounding conflict – one of the first examples that springs to mind is ‘Knives Out.
