The eight Akron police officers who fired 94 shots at unarmed Walker last year will not face criminal charges. A Summit County grand jury declined to indict the officers, whose names have been shielded from the public since the 2022 shooting.

The grand jury was made up of two Black and seven white residents. Six were women and three were men, said Anthony Pierson, a senior assistant attorney general. Walker had no prior run-ins with police, worked at Amazon and as a food delivery driver and suffered the death of his fiancée prior to the shooting. An autopsy found that he had neither drugs nor alcohol in his system.
The next day, an Akron police officer spotted the same car but decided against stopping it. When the same officer spotted Walker’s car about eight minutes later, the officer became curious and tried to stop the car. When Walker stopped, he got out of his car on the passenger side near Wilbeth Road and South Main Street wearing a face mask. He left his gun in the car, which had been separated from the bullets, next to his fiancée’s engagement ring.
