AKRON, Ohio – Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan on Thursday endorsed Akron Deputy Mayor for Intergovernmental Affairs Marco Sommerville to be the city’s next mayor.he won’t seek a third term in office, citing “much consideration and self-reflection.” In the announcement, Horrigan called serving as the city’s 62nd mayor “the honor of my professional lifetime.”
“Without hesitation, I endorse Marco Sommerville to be the next mayor of Akron,” Horrigan said in the endorsement. “Marco has been a dedicated public servant in the Akron community for over three decades. He has proven himself to be a champion of the people, always fighting for justice, equity and accountability as he worked as a councilman, council president and in city administration.
Sommerville has worked in public service for more than 30 years. He was first elected Ward 3 councilman in 1987–a position he was re-elected to 12 times according to a city news release. He served as City Council president from 2001 until 2013, until he accepted the position of director of planning and urban development with the city. He has served as deputy mayor for intergovernmental relations and senior advisor to Horrigan since 2016.
“Having prior knowledge of decision gave me an opportunity to reflect, consider and discuss with my family the opportunity to further serve my city in a new capacity,” Sommerville said in a release on Tuesday. “Today, I am announcing my desire to further serve all of Akron and formally declaring my candidacy for mayor.”
