Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was likely killed by gunfire from Israeli positions but it was probably unintentional, according to a report from the US State Department.
Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was likely killed by gunfire from Israeli positions but it was probably unintentional, the US State Department has said.Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American, was killed on May 11 during an Israeli raid in the town of Jenin
Palestinian officials criticised the report and maintained she had been deliberately targeted. Israel denies this. In forensic analysis by third-party examiners overseen by the USSC, ballistic experts determined the bullet was badly damaged, which prevented a clear conclusion as to its origin, the State Department said. The report did nothing to calm tensions between the two sides ahead of a visit by US President Joe Biden next week.
He said Palestinians would continue to pursue legal action against Israel at the International Criminal Court. Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said Israel regretted Abu Akleh's death but said an Israeli military investigation had concluded there was no intent to harm her and he gave full backing to the IDF.
