The new combined-cycle unit at Plant Barry was the largest new construction item in the expansion plan. Alabama Power also purchased another natural gas plant in central Alabama and purchased the rights to power generated at another gas plant to have more electricity available in reserve for its peak usage times, which are cold winter mornings.
The company provided the update during an informal hearing on Tuesday at the Alabama Public Service Commission. Company representatives provided information on the costs of environmental compliance and some rates that are charged to customers. The PSC hosts such informal meetings each December to discuss the upcoming year’s projections in lieu of formal rate cases or hearings required by many other state utility commissions.
