There are only six native species of venomous snake in Alabama.
, there are five distinct subspecies of copperhead, two of which can be found in Alabama. These two subspecies both have the dark, hourglass-shaped bands, but the northern copperhead has a slightly darker and more reddish color than the southern copperhead, which is found in the rest of the state.
That’s not the best way to identify them though, because the snake only does it when agitated, and there are other non-venomous water snakes that can look similar, and some that even try to mimic the cottonmouth’s namesake warning display. “Some of the biggest rattlesnakes I’ve ever seen have just one or two segments at the end of the tail,” he said.
Eastern diamondbacks are typically 3-5 feet long, but can reach lengths of up to 7 or 8 feet, though that’s not common. Fortunately, it is one of the easier species for most people to identify. “The closer you get to the Gulf of Mexico, the more common they get,” Stiles said. “They’re relatively common in places like the Conecuh National Forest, or around Gulf Shores or southern Baldwin County.”
Its distinctive, bright colors of red, yellow and black are easy to see and inspired an old rhyme about red touching yellow to differentiate the venomous coral snake from the non-venomous imposter the scarlet kingsnake. In addition to being uncommon, Stiles said the snakes spend the majority of their time underground, making human interactions rare. The number one thing to do if you see a snake in the wild that might be venomous is to leave it alone, Stiles said.
