Lots of teachers are asking for help with school supplies as they prepare for a new year.
Alabama teachers are participating in the #ClearTheList campaign, a social media effort created to help fund out-of-pocket classroom expenses.
“My mom and sister are both teachers. I knew when I was graduating from college that I didn’t have the capital on hand to cover certain expenses,” Vincent said. “I’ve utilized Donors Choose and Amazon wish lists pretty much every year of my teaching. My first year I got really excited simply from getting a pencil sharpener.”
There are many ways to find lists for your district or state -- search for wish lists on social media. Some organizations, like Get Your Teach On,, including dozens from Alabama teachers. Others post school supply lists that ask for materials from other vendors. Teachers’ needs extend beyond staple items like notebooks, pens and crayons. Some want students to have extra books, interactive games and science experiments.Vincent highlighted the importance of different needs for different teachers across grade levels. She has taught early elementary students, but now will move to a fifth-grade classroom.
