Melbourne Victory teenager Alana Murphy has received a surprise call-up to the Matildas squad for this month's SheBelieves Cup. Murphy, 19, steps in to replace injured midfielder Clare Wheeler . She is one of two uncapped players in the squad, alongside Brisbane Roar's Laini Freier. The team will assemble following this weekend's A-League Women matches. Murphy has impressed in the A-League Women competition, establishing herself as a key midfielder for Melbourne Victory.
Her call-up is a well-deserved reward for her performances. Wheeler's thigh injury is a setback for the Everton midfielder, who has struggled to secure a regular spot in the Matildas due to recurring injuries. The 27-year-old missed last year's friendlies against Brazil and Chinese Taipei because of injury and has often been relegated to a backup role behind established midfielders Katrina Gorry and Kyra Cooney-Cross. Football Australia confirmed Wheeler's withdrawal in a statement, explaining that she was medically withdrawn from the 23-player squad by her club, Everton FC Women, following a thigh injury sustained earlier this week
