In a 25-14 vote, the Alaska House approved a state budget proposal that reflects a major increase in spending and includes $2,600 payments for Alaskans:
Rep. Neal Foster, D-Nome, introduces the House version of Alaska's state operating budget on Saturday, April 9, 2022.
The Department of Revenue has also increased its estimate of revenue in the current fiscal year by $2.3 billion. Members of the Republican minority in the Alaska House of Representatives talk during a break in debate on the state budget, Thursday, April 7, 2022 in the state Capitol at Juneau. “We expect this to be paid out at the same time as the dividend, for a total payout of nearly $2,600,” Foster said.
That formula has not been used since 2016, and lawmakers have set the dividend by fiat each year since then. Legislators haven’t reached consensus on a new formula, leading to annual arguments over the size of the payout.
