Alastair Clarkson will coach North Melbourne.The four-time premiership coach at Hawthorn follows the path of his greatest influence, the late John Kennedy, in taking up the reins as North Melbourne’s senior coach after re-establishing the Hawks as a power.
Clarkson, who took a year off from football after Hawthorn paid out his contract at the end of 2021 to allow Sam Mitchell to succeed him as coach, spoke to the Giants and the Kangaroos before Essendon made a late bid for his services.The in-demand coach, however, has always considered stability as vital to success and with Essendon anything but stable at the moment, North Melbourne, who removed their coach David Noble earlier in the year, were able to make a considered pitch.
Essendon coach Ben Rutten, who has a year to remain on his contract, has had to endure a week of speculation about his future. He is expected to hold his weekly media conference on Friday at Essendon.
